The Power of Networking

The Power of Networking

October 8, 2009

Hello, my name is Alex Charles Elie, aka ACE, and welcome to my first blog.  I’m 46 years old and I’ve been through a lot in my life.  I’ve always wanted to write a book about my many experiences,    figuring someone could learn something from my successes, failures and everything in between. I’ve started a few times and I have stories here and there and I decided to start compiling them in a blog so I could get feedback and see if anyone would be interested in what I had to say, so here goes nothing…

I figured I’d start working backwards and tell you what happened to me last night, but first a little background on the ACE man.  I was born in Brooklyn in 1963 to Gerald & Jacqueline Elie, who named me Alex Charles Maurice Elie.  My two middle names came from my two Grandfathers.  Being the first born, they both wanted dib’s as a namesake, so I got them both.  When I was young, I  noticed an ACME truck in a parking lot and realized that those were my initials. Being a huge Bugs Bunny/Road Runner fan I thought how cool is that and started using those initials.  In 7th grade, I was writing stuff on the blackboard before my math teacher arrived and he asked me why I wrote ACME on the board and I told him that they were my initials.  He then put his hand over the ‘M’ and said, if you drop the ‘M’, your initials would be ACE, and then my nickname was born.  It really wasn’t my true nickname until I went to StonyBrook University in the fall of 1981.

National Lampoon’s Animal House was a big influence for many college bound   students in 1981, and the students’  in Langmuir dorm were no exception.  We had a naming ceremony and all the      incoming freshmen were given nicknames.  If you already had a cool nickname, and we all approved, that’s what was used, if not, you were assigned one, with most of them from the movie with names such as Belushi & Flounder.  So when they came to me, I offered up ACE and it was unanimously approved, and from then on I was known as ACE.

Anyway, back to last night.  I’m an IT (Information Technology) Executive, formally working for Citibank, NA.  I was a Vice President working as a Group Manager and was instrumental in setting up their CBNA Project Management Office.  I was transferred to a newly formed Audit & Compliance team and set up new processes and procedures to ensure that Citibank pass their 2009 internal audit before   getting laid off earlier this year.  I was given a six month severance package which included outplacement services at Right Management.  The 3 most important things I learned from them and my training as a Licensed Real Estate Agent is Networking, Networking and Networking.  I was already members of PMI and AITP and they both had networking parties at the FOUR Food Studio in Melville.
(515 broadhollow road, Melville , NY 11747 631.577.4444 http://www.fourfoodstudio.com/)
I’ve been there a few more times and last week the owner sent me an invite to a free party last night to kick off their TGFM   promotion, Thank Goodness Four      Mondays, with free drinks until 9:00. After the free drinks were over, I ordered a 4 cheese flatbread appetizer with shrimp which the barmaid accidentally gave to someone else.  20 minutes later they apologized and gave me a free beer and another pizza. They also delivered a pizza to the couple next to me.  Being alone, I offered to share and we all shared all 3 pizzas. We introduced ourselves and it turned out that Bob has a band called Copycat that plays at the Riverview in my home town of Oakdale.  They are an all white band that play Soca, Calypso, Reggae, Top 40, 80s and Rock-n-roll.  I looked up their website on my PALM Treo, www.copycatband.info and found out they are playing next at Macarthur Park in Rockville Centre on Oct 17th and at El Mariachi in Rockville Centre for a Halloween party on the 31st.  Then I asked him what he did in real life and he told me that he ran an  IT (Information Technology) Department for an Aerospace company and asked me what I did.  I told him that I just got my Real Estate License to cover myself between IT Consulting jobs and that I was a Senior IT Project Manager.  His eyes lit up as I handed him my ACE Consulting Expeditors IT Networking card and we talked shop for a bit.  I told him that I used to work for Loral Fairchild Systems and the next thing I know, we are setting up time for an interview later this week.  I’ll let you know what happens on my next blog.  Please feel free to leave comments with your networking success and failures…
Thanks…

The Mets get a much needed win, 11-7 over the Braves

The New York Mets coming into tonight were nine games back in the Wild Card to the Atlanta Braves. Having lost the first game of the series already, the Mets needed a win tonight to have any playoff hopes this year. The Mets were not only able to get that much needed win tonight, but they were also able to also wake up their bats.
Tonight the Mets muscled out four home runs with Justin Turner hitting two, one in the first and one in the fourth. The other two home runs were hit by Jason Bay in the third and Josh Thole in the fourth. Turner was one of several Mets who were having a hard time finding not only their home run swing but any sort of hit. For the past four games, the team gathered a collective batting average of .206 in the month of August before the game tonight.
Bay and Thole were two more Met hitters who have yet to find their stride this season. Jason Bay is barely staying above water hitting .242 before tonight’s game in which he went 2-5 with three rbi’s today. Then you have Josh Thole who after tonight has his batting average up to .259 on the year, both players combining for only ten home runs on the season.
This game overall was a team effort with the Mets having scored eleven runs on sixteen hits having everyone on the starting lineup getting a hit besides the pitcher. This was all on done with Tommy Hanson, the Braves current ace with Jair Jurrjens being placed on the 15-day DL today due to a right knee sprain.
They say that if you want to get to Tommy Hanson, you have to get him early or not at all, and the Mets did just that. Tommy Hanson era in the first is two innings is just over 5.00, then from the third inning on shows-off an era at almost 2.00. The Mets were able to tag Hanson with seven runs on eight hits in only 3.1 innings.
Now with the Mets finding lightning in a bottle with the storms rolling in and out of Citi Field all night, hope to take there hot bats into the last game of the Series tomorrow as the look to take the series from the Braves and in-turn close in on the Wild Card.

Has the Fire Sale Begun?

TheBloggingACE

Guest Blogger: Eric Elie

Has the Fire Sale Begun?

The Mets are a hot topic of conversation as the teams general manager Sandy Alderson has made it clear that a fire sale of the team will only happen if he feels they are out of the playoff race come the trade deadline.

On Tuesday, the New York Mets sent Francisco Rodriguez and cash to the Milwaukee Brewers for two players to be named later. This trade was almost inevitable due to K-Rod’s contract situation (Would be given a 1-year 17.5 million dollar contract if he finished 55 games this year, currently at 34 on the season). The trade was assumed to happen but it happened 17 games before the trade deadline. A little early for a team to trade a big piece. Though in the interview of Sandy Alderson with WFAN in the video above, we hear Alderson’s reasons with insight on the future of the Mets in retrospect with the deadline, Jose Reyes, and Carlos Beltran.
The Mets as well as their fans are about to go on an emotional roller coaster this next 17 games as the teams present state and future hang in the balance.

“Long Time No See”

It has been a while since I posted anything on my blog so I want to do I wrap of everything that has happened since mid June.

The Mets, since that last series against the Angels that ended on June 19th, have lost only one series and produced a 11-6 record. With this new surge, the Mets were able to send two players to the All Star game this year, right fielder Carlos Beltran and shortstop Jose Reyes.
Both of these players may not be Mets by the end of the season as both have their contracts expire at the end of the 2011 season. Carlos Beltran seems to already be on the move out of here and the mantra from the fans is they know the Wilpons have no interest in pursuing a new contract with Beltran and are willing letting him go off to free agency. The same cannot be said about Jose Reyes.
The spirit of the New York Mets, Jose Reyes, provides not only the spark offensively for this team, whether it be with the bat, his speed, or defense, but he is also the culmination of the burning passion that the Mets fans bring to every game at Citi Field. This man, homegrown through the Mets organization, is beloved by this city and is argued to be the most dynamic player in all of baseball.
The management, especially Sandy Alderson, seems to have the same feelings as the fans when he expressed to the Mets booth, Ron Darling and Gary Cohen, the Mets impending future on Thursday’s game vs the Dodgers. “Very Unlikely”, was the words used to describe the prospect of trading Reyes before the trade deadline, as for the rest of the team, the standing’s will dictate what Sandy Alsderson wants to do.

http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20110708&content_id=21588472&vkey=news_nym&c_id=nym

If the Mets keep surging come the trade deadline, the firesale that was predicted this season will be cancelled. If the Mets end up faltering and falling apart like they have done in the past, the slogan for the Mets this July should say, “Everything Must Go”.
So with the Mets winning the first game of the Giants series last night on the shoulders of Scott Hairston and his pinch-hit home run in the 8th, they hope to see more balls fly over the wall as the go up against All-Star bound Tim Lincecum tonight at 9:10 Eastern time as the Mets are guaranteed to enter the All-Star break this year above the .500 mark.

Jose Reyes, an important part of the Mets and their fans.

TheBloggingACE

Guest Blogger: Eric Gerald Elie

Jose Reyes, an important part of the Mets and their fans...

I want to start this blog with a hot topic that has been the at the forefront of every conversation around baseball, where will Jose Reyes land by the end of the year.

On June 4th, 2011, I was able to head on down to Citi Field and watch my New York Mets take on the Atlanta Braves.  The game was amazing, we had a great pitchers duel between Dillon Gee and Jair Jurrjens.  Both these pitchers were able to hold each others lineups down as it was a scoreless game going into the bottom of the seventh.  Here is where the Mets were able to show what they are capable of.

After Jason Bay was able to reach base on a fielding error by the Braves shortstop Alex Gonzalez, the stadium started to stir.  Then as soon as you see Josh Thole, the Mets catcher hit a screaming line drive to right, you see the crowd beginning to wake up.

As the bases are then loaded after Ruben Tejada got hit by a pitch thrown by Jurrjens and pinch-hitter Jason Pridie gets an rbi single.  Scott Proctor comes into a game where everyone in the stadium is thinking the same thing.  As Jose Reyes comes up to bat, everyone is just praying to the baseball Gods that Reyes does what he does best.

http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=15544411

Then on command Reyes hits a bases clearing triple down the left field line.  The entire stadium just explodes as Reyes slides head first into third giving the Mets ad 4-0 lead which would hold, leading to a Mets 5-0 victory against the Braves who would then go on to win the rubber match the next day by a score of 6-4.

That one game Saturday, more importantly, that one at-bat by Reyes, proved to me how important the All Star shortstop is to the Mets.  He is the heart and soul of the Mets.  He leads by example and gets everyone in the dugout to play better when he is performing.  More importantly the management for the New York Mets need to see this quality in Reyes and retain him, he should be considered an irreplaceable commodity to the organization as he will forever be loved by the fans of New York for his work ethic, performance, and those slides into third base.   He is too important to the fans to have traded for prospects or just let go into free agency.   I would love to see Reyes got offered a long-term contract before the All Star break as every other Mets fan believes should happen.   I hope that in the end, the Mets will not look back at their future decision on Reyes and regret it.

The Grand Opening...Part II

A lot has happened since my decision to transition from a corporate drone to a truly independent consultant.  Here is my story of the past 25 days, the 25 days that I said was to be devoted to updating my web site and concentrating on my new consulting business.  Alas, the best laid plans of mice and men...

On September 21st, 2010, at an ACE Consulting Expeditors, Inc. sponsored table at the AITP "Battle of the Operating Systems" meeting on September 21, 2010, I officially "launched" my consulting company & its corporate website TheConsultingAce.com .  I boasted that I bought, created and updated the site in 25 hours and imagine what I could do in 25 days.  The meeting and launch went great, I collected business cards for a contest to give away a free 6 month subscription to web page on my site for either my ACE Coupon Express page for businesses to advertise their specials and coupons on the Internet, starting at under $20 a month or my ACE Career Expeditors page for people in transition and looking for a new opportunity.  I have not yet priced the ACE Career Expeditors page yet, but I'm thinking it's worth at least a $9.95 a month.

Alas, here we are 25 days later and I'm getting ready to take my daughter to the Sayville Fall Fest, and my website is nowhere near what I expected it to be and here's why...

The first few days after the launch, I spent going to networking meetings, planning for an October 16th Share-a-Day in Merrick, meeting with possible partners for my consulting company, working Real Estate leads, meeting business owners to sell websites, celebrating Punctuation Day on September 24th, (My sister Carole's birthday as well), moving out of my Syosset apartment that I was only using 1 or 2 days a week anyway, joined 2 racquetball leagues at Sportime in Syosset (Monday's at 8:30 & Thursdays at 7:00 in case anyone wants to come down and watch), arguing with my WebSite Sales Business Partner and Possible Future Girlfriend (WSSBPAPFG) about not being focused enough on selling Websites  (as if our EBS relationship issues were not enough),  having similar focus "discussions" with my family, going to court to battle my future ex-wife's (FEW) support payments and visitation rights and taking my daughter to see "Legend of the Guardians", which was a great movie and one that I highly recommend for all ages.

I got tired just re-reading what I was doing, so I decided to focus on 3 things, rather than being a jack of all consulting trades.  I had a meeting with my parents and Sally, my WSSBPAPFG, all of which thought I was crazy to start my own business and ignore corporate America.  Sally wanted me to just concentrate on Website Sales, stating that it was the fasted way to produce income for myself.  My parents wanted me to keep looking for a "real" job and forget this silly business thing that I was doing.   After a very interesting dinner conversation, I made the following recommendation...

I would concentrate on Website Sales, Real Estate and IT Recruiting, spend my week as follows...
MWF: Work on Web Site Sales, visit businesses, do cold calling, update my website, create flyer's and create processes and procedures for Website Sales, including cold calling scripts, prospecting logs and cards and organizing my A/R's & A/P's.
TuTh: Work on my Real Estate leads, update my Real Estate Website, Social Media Campaigns, Open Houses and training.
Saturday: R&R, networking meeting in any, visiting with my daughter.
Sunday: Have a Century 21 Open House or go to a Website corporate training session.
* The recruiting work would be sprinkled throughout the week as opportunities arose.

It's now October 1st and I haven't even looked at my website, but I now had a plan and could start focusing, or so I thought.  I started to work on my new plan when I get an email from Time Warner Cable at 1:04 pm, stating that they already scheduled me for interview on Monday morning at 11:00 am, and wanted to confirm that I could make it.  My first instinct was to say no, but I figured, what the heck, it may turn out to be a great opportunity and if not, I may be able to use my recruiting business to fill the spot and get a referral fee.  So I relpied that I would be there Monday at 11:00 am.  I spent the weekend going to an all day seminar on Saturday and Sunday doing something, but my CRS is kicking in and I didn't write it down. (CRS = Can't Remember Stuff, but don't worry, it''s not contagious)

Running out of time now, but I'll continue this blog this weekend, in the meantime, remember that Life is too important to take seriously....

Second blog from my phone...

Second blog from my phone...
Text blogging is new to me, so I don't know how many words I have.  I'm went to court today to submit some support modifications & reply to my future ex-wife's divorce papers and was told that if I didn't have a lawyer, I should run what I'm submitting by the folks at the Law Library on the 4th floor.  I allocated about 10 min to review what I prepared to submit, another 20 to review the response to the divorce papers and I'd be off to my nearby 3:00 appointment.  I arrived at 2:00, went through security and made it to the Law Library in 10 minutes.  I signed in and found out that there was only one person to help all of Suffolk County and I was third in line.  I was told each person could take 10 min or 1 hour depending on the individual situation.  I waited for 45 min to no avail.  Not even 1 name was called, so I scooted to my 3:00 appointment, figuring I could get it done by 4:00 and get back B4 the courts closed at 4:45, but alas, my 3:00 Doctors appointment ended at 5:30, with no chance of making the courts today & impacting my 5:00 appointment with my daughter. Alas, the best laid plans of mice & men...

P.S. It seems that when you text to this blog, it saves it 140 charaters or so at a time.  Seemed more like tweets than a blog and they were randomly "chopped" up.  I guest it was my phone that breaks up large text's into bite sized portions.  Anyway, I edited the second text blog and put it all in this one blog.  The email blog worked much better and since my phone has both, I'll save the text blog updates for tweet like comments.
Thanks...

My First Email Blogging Post

To all,
This is my first email blogging post.
I just transferred my blog to blogger.com and it's so much easier to use than wordpress.
I'm writing this email/post from my Treo while sitting in front of my computer. I'm testing out the new features and planning my new consulting companies charter.

Over the past month, I have been exploring many consulting options for my new corporation, ACE Consulting Expeditors, Inc.. From IT Consulting to Real Estate Agent to ACE Career Expeditors for IT Recruiting to ACE Laundry Services to Aces Ices & more to Arbonne Sales Consultant to ACE Print Promotions to ACE Travel Services to CYO Coordinator to ACE Career Counseling to Convention Coordinator to ACE Paper Back Writer & Blogger to Web Sites Sales, ACE was going to be the place for all of your consulting needs...
I get tired just thinking about it all.
So last week I decided to see which of my wide net of consulting services had the greatest potential and concentrate on the top 3 and let my other consulting services fade in the background, but still available if anyone needs them.

So the winners are...
1. Web Site Sales
2. Real Estate Sales
3. IT Recruiting

I'll get into more detail about the winning ACE Consulting Services on my next blog.

In the mean time, enjoy my other blogs and visit my website to see its progress until it's official grand opening on October 22, 2010.

Thanks...
ACE

The Grand Opening...

The Grand Opening…
September 20, 2010

Today is the first day of the rest of my career…

This is my Linked in post that I shared with my network on Monday morning…

Today I permanently transition from a corporate drone to a truly Independent Consultant, with the grand opening of my web site, which I bought from myself on Friday, am creating today on Monday and debuting on Tuesday at our monthly AITP meeting.  I hope to see most of you there, and if not, I’ll send out my website link when I complete it tonight.  (Yes I’m starting with a blank page at 10am today and will have a completely functional website by midnight tonight.)
Read more on my blog, which I’ll be updating throughout the day…

Expediting your consulting needs since 2009…

My transition started after my job was displaced at CitiGroup in December of 2008, reinforced with a mutual decision to terminate my consulting contract at Cablevision and culminating with last Friday’s AITP meeting when I decided to go for it and sponsor a table at next Tuesday’s AITP Battle of the Operating Systems meeting to launch my Website and Consulting Company to the world.
Look out world, The Consulting ACE is here to stay…

I called the WebCenter Design Center at 10:51 and started working with my WebCenter Specialist Michelle.  Since the demo site I utilized was a Real Estate site, she deleted all the pages and we are starting off with a new template, more closely resembling a consulting firms layout.  I described the general idea that I had for the site and emailed her my company flyer and brochure for her to use to set up my website.  She was also checking on my 10 domain names that I created on Friday to see if they were ready to use.  I then left Woodhaven and ran some errands.  I needed to return a Belkin router to Costco that I couldn’t seem to set up properly and pick up a DVD player to show my WebCenter Presentation at the AITP meeting tomorrow.  I’m updating this blog from Johnny Rockets at the Broadway mall, thanks to my optimumwifi connection, getting ready to call Michelle to see where we are at.

I bought the website & domain on Friday, www.TheConsultingACE.com and jotted down ideas for my website over the weeked and on Monday @ 10:51am est, I started to work with my webcenter design team to start building my website. I gave Michelle my idea’s over the phone and emailed her my business flyers and the CYO Hoodie flyer & she went to work.  We had a few calls throughout the to clarify what I wanted and add new pages to my site.  I finally freed up after 10 pm to look at what she did and send her comments to she could update the site prior to my Noon launch.  Turns out she forgot to publish it and it was still in her development workspace, so I couldn’t see what she did yet. When we last spoke, she said that she was going to have someone finish my ACE Commerce Express Page to sell the CYO Hoodies and when she got in at 7am, we could make some last minute changes, see if my domain name was ready & link it to the site.  I woke up at 7am to call Michelle to publish it when I realized that she works in Las Vegas, which translates to 10am est, 2 hours from my launch & I was planning on getting to & setting up for the AITP Sponsorship table at the Huntington Hilton from 10 to 12.

I tried to call Michelle, hands free, from my Company car, and got a different Michelle from the design center. She tried to find the first Michelle but she was already usy with another client and she offered to help. I explained my delema and she published the site and we walked through the site over the phone, made additional changes and republished. My domain name was finalized and she was able to associate TheConsultingAce.com to my new website.

I got to the Huntington Hilton with Sally, my Market America business partner, and at 11:15 am. I was finally able to see my site after setting up my table, at 11:51 am, 25 hours after I started with my Michelle’s from the MA Design Center Team. This is the version that is up and running right now. The only thing missing was to fill out a form with ITransact to accept credit card payments and let the know which bank account to deposit the payments.

Please give me your impressions of the site as it is now and any suggestions you have would be appreciated as I get ready to customize and grow the site.

If I could do this over the phone in just 25 hours, imagine what I could do in 25 days with a computer.
Keep checking back as I will blogging about the next 25 days of updating my website for it’s official grand opening 25 days later on October 22, 2010, the day before the Sayville Fall Fest on Saturday, October 23rd, 2010 in Sayville, NY.
